Shade matching is one of the most important parts of aesthetic dental restorations. A single shade tab can give the laboratory a basic reference, but it rarely tells the full story of a natural tooth. Natural teeth are not one flat colour; they have different zones, translucency, brightness, surface texture and character. Proper shade communication between the clinic and dental laboratory is therefore essential for crowns, veneers, anterior restorations and smile-design cases.

Why One Shade Tab Is Not Enough

A shade tab usually provides only the main body shade of the tooth. The final restoration also depends on details such as cervical shade, incisal translucency, enamel effects, stump shade, lighting and the surrounding teeth.

For example, two patients may both be recorded as A2, yet their teeth can look completely different in the mouth. One may have a warmer cervical area, while another may show greater incisal translucency or surface brightness.

The laboratory needs more than a designation such as A2 or B1 to create a natural-looking restoration.

For accurate shade communication, dentists should send clear shade details together with clinical photographs. Good visual references help the technician understand the tooth and plan ceramic layering, staining, glazing and final finishing more accurately.

Sharing the stump shade helps the laboratory choose the appropriate material thickness, opacity and ceramic strategy. Without this information, the restoration may appear darker or different after cementation.

Material Selection and Shade Outcome

Different restorative materials interact with light differently. Zirconia, layered zirconia, E.max, veneers and PFM restorations each have distinct optical properties.

Highly translucent materials may look more natural, but they can also reveal stump discolouration. Opaque materials can mask dark backgrounds but may require additional ceramic work to achieve a natural appearance.
